New WW2 Workshop

Posted on: 2 January 2024

Did you know Richmond Park was closed to the public between 22nd December 1940 and 1st May 1945 to help support WW2 war efforts? We recently had a group of Year 6 visitors from a local school to pilot our new WW2 workshop and they learned all about war efforts in the park in the 1940s.

Following the success of our WW1 workshops, we are introducing a brand-new workshop to provide hands-on learning and education to visiting students around the important role the park played in WW2.

Richmond Park in WW2 offers students insights around the technological innovations put in place to support the war effort, how and why people grew their own food in the park, and what life was generally like on the Home Front. As part of the workshop, students:

  • Work as part of the ‘Phantom Squad’ cracking codes on the nature trail;
  • “Dig for Victory” by gardening in the Victorian glasshouse; and,
  • Train with an Air Raid warden and dispose of a replica incendiary bomb beneath the trees in our picnic garden.

Feedback from our pilot sessions has been positive with comments around “engaging and age-appropriate activities” and inclusivity “towards all learners, reinforcing our learning as well as introducing new learning”.

The Richmond Park in WW2 workshop is now available for bookings and enquiries. We look forward to welcoming students!
