Learning objectives and links to the National Curriculum of Study
The session links directly to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework: The Early Learning Goals (ELG) – understanding the world, past and present.
Outline of Activity
- The children have an introduction to the session by learning about Holly Lodge and its Victorian past.
- The children will compare photos from the past and present.
- They will discover the link between our present King and Queen Victoria.
The class will then be divided into three groups and rotate between three tasks:
- Have fun playing with toys and games from Victorian times, making comparisons with the toys they play with.
- They will visit our Victorian pharmacy, find out how people kept clean and healthy in the past. Then they will make pretend pills using original Victorian equipment.
- In our Victorian classroom, they will experience what school was like for Victorian children and they will match objects from the past with those from the present.
Ideas for pre-visit learning
- Ask the children to talk to their parents and grandparents about their childhoods
- Look at pictures of life during Victorian times.
Ideas for follow-up work back at school
- Draw a picture of an old object they used today.
- Make a collage of past and present people, places and things.
