On a bright and beautiful Monday in May, a team of volunteers and staff from the Holly Lodge Centre set up shop for the day at the historic and grand estate of Syon Park. Organized by Countryside Learning and Syon Park, we participated in their Countryside Classroom Day where we met with over 320 students from 10 different classes.
Countryside Classroom Days are held at estates across the UK and according to their website, offer “the opportunity for schools visit country estates and for the children to find out more about the teams of people who take care of the environment and tend the estate land”.
Back at Syon Park, topics ranged from falconry to archaeology to chickens to fisheries. The Holly Lodge Centre team brought our nature trail knowledge to the meadow at Syon Park, encouraging students to become ‘Citizen Scientists’ through wildflower identification and counts in the meadow. A lovely time was had by all, enjoying the beautiful landscape and enthusiastic student groups.
